What are the Main Design Considerations when Deploying Video Analytics for Night Time Detection?

The ability of video analytics software to reliably detect behaviors defined by the user, while maintaining a minimal false alarm rate, is greatly influenced by the quality of the video image provided by the camera. Night time detection is much more challenging than detections in day light scenarios, due to insufficient lighting, headlights from passing vehicles and more. Providing good image quality for analytics at night time can be accomplished by following some simple design rules that spell the difference between success and failure. The following guidelines are recommended for a best-practice design approach:

Try to illuminate the field of view (FOV) of each camera uniformly. Sharp differences in illumination can cause the camera auto iris to close, thus reducing visibility in darker areas.

• Unless using thermal cameras, artificial lighting for night time detection is a must. This can come from existing lighting sources such as street lights, or dedicated lighting installed as part of the deployment.

Illuminate consistently to ensure reliable monitoring by the video analytics software. Use photocell-based lighting activation for continuity.

To determine FOV and illumination, use a monitor (not the naked eye). A target that requires detection should be clearly visible standing still when viewed through a monitor under night time conditions in the entire region of interest.

Don’t install the camera too close to lights (particularly infrared illuminators) which can attract insects that might trigger false / nuisance alarms. Try to install the camera at a distance of at least 2 meters (6 feet) from the light source.

Try to exclude the sky and unnecessary distant areas from the camera’s FOV. Tilt the camera so that it’s angled FOV includes as much as possible of the Region of Interest (ROI).

• Avoid installing a camera in a lit area (outdoors) when the FOV/ROI you require is in a dark (indoor) area.

Don’t install the camera facing lights, windows, the sun, or in areas with multiple reflections or shadows.

While detections at night time face more challenges than day time detections, these tips can assist in gaining better image quality, and ultimately, better video analytics performance.

Exhibition Update: ADI Expo (Belgium), ASIS (USA) & Sicurezza (Italy)

Agent Vi participated in the ADI Global Distribution Expo Day in Belgium in September 2010, giving Systems Integrators an opportunity to learn about Agent Vi’s products. It was demonstrated that combined with Sony cameras and Milestone’s VMS, Vi-Search provides an optimal solution for forensic search and investigation of recorded video.

In September 2010, Agent Vi presented from within the Milestone booth at the ASIS trade show in Dallas, USA, as a member of their partner program. Agent Vi’s products were presented to a large number of attendees, including technology partners, systems integrators and end users. Vi-Search’s automatic support for virtual PTZ on HD cameras was presented for the first time and gained recognition for its unique ability to enhance the usability of Megapixel cameras.

Agent Vi also participated in the Sicurezza exhibition in Milan, Italy in November 2010. Displaying from within the Milestone booth, Agent Vi demonstrated Vi-System integrated with Milestone’s video management system (VMS), allowing for real-time detections to be reported in the Milestone interface. Vi-Search was also demonstrated.

Case Study: Agent Vi Brings Security to a New Level at Scott County Jail

Agent Vi’s real-time detection and alert software – Vi-System – was recently installed at Scott County Jail in Minnesota, USA. Occupied since 2005, the facility covers 88,737 square feet, and includes 160 cells that house sentence and pre-trial adult male and female offenders.

Scott County Jail sought a real-time video analytics solution to assist in the detection of unauthorized people in restricted zones. Accordingly, 90 cameras were enabled with detection capabilities. When a detection takes place, Corrections staff is alerted immediately to the breach, allowing them to decide – as the event occurs – how to best respond to the incident. Such alerts have proven to be much more effective than visual monitoring of screens in the master control station by Corrections staff.

Upcoming Training & Certification Courses

Systems Integrators and Distributors are welcome to join upcoming training and certification courses as follows:

  • Utrecht, Holland: 14-16 December 2010
  • Rosh Ha’ayin, Israel: 27-29 December 2010
  • Milan, Italy: 25-27 January 2011

The 3-day course provides comprehensive knowledge regarding Agent Vi’s products and gives participants the skills to sell, install and support these products. All Systems Integrators who would like to become members of Agent Vi’s Channel Partner Program must complete the certification course.
